Why I make hats; Part 1
I am from New York where winters are long and cold. Wearing a hat is a non-negotiable. There was a week as a senior at FIT where I lost about a hat a day. I remember one fuzzy blackberry colored beret. A green formed hat.
Others are not as memorable. What I do know is I needed a hat. I didn’t have any money to spare. At the time I think I was making about 275/week as Koos Van Den Akker’s design assistant. What I did have was access to his stock of materials. Anyway hats don’t take a lot of material. I think I had somewhere to go and I make the quickest, warmest and most simple hat I could. One that wouldn’t get lot or if it did, I could make it again.
The result is my classic cloche.
